Dice games are a fun and engaging way to practice number recognition, counting, subitizing, and one-to-one correspondence. To engage the whole body, make the dice big and play movement games! All you will need to make the dice is a cube-shaped tissue box and paper to cover the sides.
Materials:
- 2 cubic objects (such as tissue boxes)
- tape
- marker
- paper to cover tissue boxes
Instructions:
To make the dice:
- Cover the cubes (tissue boxes) with paper On one cube, put a numeral or a group of dots on each square face. The numerals help children practice number recognition, and the dots help them practice subitizing (instant recognition of quantity). On the other cube, write whole body movement words, such as stomp, crawl, hop on one foot, skip, touch your toe, turn around, etc. If possible, also add visuals of the movements.
To play the game:
- One child rolls the number die, and everyone says the number (for example, “3”).Another child rolls the movement die, and everyone says the movement (“hop on one foot”).All children do the movement as many times as the number (hop on one foot 3 times).
Modifications:
You can roll two number dice so that children would add or subtract the numbers, and then roll the movement die and move accordingly.
