Writing shapes and numbers are skills we practice in Pre-Kindergarten. This activity focuses on making shapes and numbers while practicing sequencing, one to one correspondence, length, patterns, time, and shapes. Some children were excited to discover that numbers are infinite!
Materials
- Chalk
- It can be helpful to provide students with number lines, as well as circles, squares, and triangles to trace, if needed.
Instructions
Children use sidewalk chalk to create a hopscotch form using at least one circle, one square, and one triangle. Students then label each shape one through ten. Children hop on each form while reciting its number.
Using a shape form for tracing may be helpful for many students. It is often challenging for young children to make the chalk shape large enough for one to label and step inside.
Modifications
Different shapes including, but not limited to, trapezoids and hexagons can also be included in this activity. Writing numbers to 15, 20, etc. can also be practiced. My PreK students were deeply inspired and created number line hopscotches that reached over 300. Students may also be tasked by drawing shape patterns, i.e. square, triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, etc. Students might also practice drawing a shape and use tally marks, instead of numbers, to label each shape appropriately. Students may also work in teams or small groups to complete this task.
